Dr Brenton Johns is an orthopaedic surgeon specialising in hip & knee surgery with a focus on joint replacement, robotic surgery, arthroscopic and reconstructive surgery.
He is a fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and the Australian Orthopaedic Association, a member of the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons and a member of the Canadian Arthroplasty Society.
Originally from a farm in central western NSW, he became interested in orthopaedic surgery whilst playing rugby. He earned his medical degree at the University of New South Wales. He then moved to Newcastle in 2013 where he completed the Australian Orthopaedic training program.


Dr Johns completed two additional international speciality fellowships dedicated to hip and knee replacement surgery, revision surgery and robotic joint replacement surgery. The first fellowship was at McMaster University, Canada with A/Prof Mitchell Winemaker, A/Prof Kamal Bali and A/Prof Daniel Tushinski. The second fellowship was at the Queen Elizabeth II Health Sciences Centre, Canada with Prof Michael Dunbar, Prof Glen Richardson and Dr Jennifer Leighton.

Dr Johns’ PhD was examined by professors at Oxford University and the University of Melbourne in 2025. His orthopaedic research has been presented nationally and internationally at scientific meetings at Oxford University, the Australian Orthopaedic Association, International Society for Technology in Arthroplasty and American Association of Orthopedic Surgeons. His research has also been published in leading orthopaedic journals including the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery and Journal of Arthroplasty.

Dr Johns has completed international surgical visitations with leading institutions and surgeons including:
Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, a leading global centre in orthopaedic surgery with Dr Brian Chalmers.
Dr Stephen Howell & Dr Alexander Nedopil in California, who innovated kinematic knee replacement surgery.
Dr Martin Roche at Holy Cross Hospital, Florida who pioneered robotic joint replacement surgery.
Dr Robert Marchand at Rhode Island, a world leader in robotic joint replacement.
